It isn't that major and minor races have super abilities. They may be simply more pragmatic. In such models, their land has high carrying capacity, and they never disregarded agriculture and focused on urbanization/ specialization. Their people wear many hats and are comfortable with it and are generalists versus being nearly useless widget makers and widget salesman.
That might or might not affect research as their quantum physicists may be gardeners who entirely raise their own food and who would think groceries stores would be bizarre.

I wish there was real trade. Some minor race like the Wollon are amusing and yet for all we know, there may be no skin care products in the entire galaxy. That crap might be really as valuable as gold to many races. Maybe they have got nothing at all.

The BotE team made perhaps the most fascinating mythos, but once you subjugate or gain a minor race as a member, they sort of fade into the background. That is a shame as all these species are just too great and entertaining to be this way.

So notice that although there is no trade, yet whoever controls the Wollon's homesector gets that 75% credit in that minor race homeworld. So really there is a vague trade system. And so you could create all kinds of extremely useful products essential to starship operations, or medicines or "recreational products" or illegal powered sidearms or gambling or food.

Maybe the intention is that raw materials rise in value over time, and so the player does not manipulate it, so the alien races buy and sell, and something like iridium rises where it is worth 4000 credits.
I'm not going to play that way as I figured out a legitimate system making millions. You do what you want. But if that was the intention, I would add income to other major and minor races so they do economically thrive.
The issue with that kind of economic system is severe inflation. Now this can be scripted and shows up in Medieval 2 realism mods where the king outfitting soldiers and due to having huge standing armies, accidentally creates inflation. Then everything costs more. As happened in history with the poor quartermaster about to pull his hair out.

I think all players want to occasionally dabble in war. Sure they will as wargaming is fun. Most sci-fi dramas are comprised of minutes of war over a entire season. Human beings like just honorable wars as we are not actually very just or honorable, so we live vicariously through characters who do not take ethical shortcuts.
What you may find is a lot of people win by mixed tactics, and if there is a transcendence goal as a result of studying all research at advanced levels, then they get the chance to make the most futuristic buildings, including better starships and troops and planetary defenses, so they can defend and not necessarily fight very often.
They might even spend a fortune helping others through missions, because that's human nature.
As such, befriending minor races, that are amazing at research, may actually be the goal and so seek them out. There is the genuine power.

The Exomerians are a large worm-like species from the Exomer system. Although they are viewed with suspicion by strangers and are often incorrectly classified as dangerous, this breed is a shy and peaceful creature. The Exomerians move silently through the night. When looking for prey, which mostly consists of small insects, a kind of sonar system helps them. Several long tentacles grow on their mouths, with which they can send out concentrated sound waves in all directions in order to track down their food. Your communication consists of different sibilants of different pitches. Each of its tentacles can generate its own sibilant sound. Since they are very different from other races, their interest in strange creatures is all the greater. Verbal communication is a problem, which is why they created a huge archive of all kinds of communication methods. We shouldn't miss this knowledge.

The Exomerians are a shy late species of giant worms and they look fearsome and eat insects and on their own do not have advanced knowledge, but have a huge ability to grant a great leap forward in research. Their ability facilitates major race success. Maybe their entire species then allows tremendous diplomacy as your species not only can communicate, but understand exotic lifeforms.

Based upon what I read here, it may not only be plausible to have more random events by turning that on in advance saved game files that are part of mods by changing the stringtable.txt, but you can show art too. That can do a lot to propel subplots of complex storylines. It then may or may not affect the mythos of BotE and not only the player, but possibly situations benefitting other major and minor races based upon player's actions. This would be like dropping a pebble into a calm pool of water and having a rippling effect.
Then BotE becomes a dynamic galaxy and possibly some random event that happens to your starship crew, then cascades and affects others. You influenced them just because you have starships and troops out there.
Say troops liberated an occupied inhabited sector held by another major race. That might earn higher acceptance from that minor race without you offering them a gift or offering a treaty or terraforming one of their planets.

This really is dependent on the creation of new declared random event types and how much they can sometimes affect the player or others. The goal would be occasionally beneficence to AI minor and major races and never harm.

I presume the AI bombards like crazy then terraformed the planets in that bombarded inhabited system. Then uses a colony ship to colonize . That then adds billions of their species to the existing species that might be present in very low amounts. This is just a theory.
It does no good to give the AI starting troops as according to what I have read, the AI realizes that it cannot afford a standing military unless the economy is good.
This is another reason why a modder needs to establish all the infrastructure and planetary defenses and defensive standing military with troops and starships, and plausibly in lower than 10.0 billion inhabited sectors, starbases to protect them...as they have insufficient population to power up more advanced defenses.
The AI is not a good builder of empires, just some humans are. So it is preordained they will lose unless set on higher difficulty where they get multiple benefits. Still, only a experienced wargamer who plans all six empires, is just about the only way to have a highly defensible AI empires.

If your empire looks prone to bombardment and they hate you and they are stronger, they will try massive bombardment to vaporize civilians, then follow with a wave of colony ships to get the inhabited sector under their control. The AI will probably not invade your civilians and professional soldiers.
