A flagship gives the following bonuses:

In combat: 10% damage bonus for all ships of your own empire in the same sector

If command ships (10% bonus on attack and defense) and a flagship are in a fleet, all ships have a 20% bonus. Multiple command ships do not increase the bonus any further.

Mixed Fleet Bonuses
in general: + 5% damage bonus for each additional ship class after the first, in detail:

1 ship class - any number of ships 0% (= no bonus)
2 ship classes - at least 2 ships per ship class 10%, otherwise 5%
3 ship classes - at least 2 ships per ship class 15%, otherwise 5%
4 ship classes - at least 3 ships per ship class 20%, otherwise 15% or 5%
5 ship classes - at least 4 ships per ship class 25%, otherwise 20%, 15% or 5%
6 ship classes - at least 5 ships per ship class 30%, otherwise 25%, 20%, 15% or 5%
I'm not certain everyone understands these fleet design principles as the information is scattrer acoss the forum and wiki (besides being in German and translated).

You are getting multiple additive bonuses by declaring a flagship, especially a command ship, and diversifying fleet composition. You want to be cognizant that fast manueverable ships are escorting others and so are slowed down by these ships.

In the advanced game, you would attack with fleets to deal with pre-existing minor race fleets, and ideally playing against a human player who can outsmart the AI by such fleet principles.

It's amazing how detailed and well thought out this combat system is. I'm not usually impressed, and I definitely am with BotE for Android.

Every ship has a designated task, and in fleet design, you would imagine how one ship would perform in conjunction with others based on its characteristics and weaponry and its designated task.

You could spend hours trying to create idealized ship design, then create a fleet based on tasks, assigning a command ship, and diversification of ships based on those tasks...to increase your chance of success (based on anticipated enemies and their attributes) and maximize damage inflicted.

It's elegant and logical.

The first thing a starship captain needs to know after a battle is the damage report as he may have hullbreaches and of course has lost soldier who have died and are wounded.

Well in BotE, if you are in a fleet, you need to know the following.

Repairing a fleet is only possible if all ships are in need of repair. This prevents a fully operational ship from being accidentally switched to "Repair".

You can also repair a fleet by switching to "s" = stationing. Then the fleet does not have to be disbanded.
You would head to the nearest shipyard and hopefully a good one is near the front. You would dispatch a second fleet, or better, it was already sent before the battle so you have relief and support as the enemy will be dispatching another group of ships to the same region where the battle took place.

You don't have to disband a fleet and then form a new one, but if you plan well, you might enter orbit, send the damaged ship into the ship yard, pick up a replacement, and move to the next engagement...not waiting on that ship or ships to be repaired.

How would the player end up building such a diverse fleet to maximize damage to the enemy?

Doing so is the accumulation of every possible talent as that requires considerable research. That means the player could manage the economy. That meant the player extensively terraformed. That means the player explored to find the best sectors with all the resources. So the player had built up the necessary infrqstructure. Which means the player hadn't wasted money by maintaining too high a standing military.

And it isn't straight forward, as the player doesn't just rush the units, but trained them as a facility long before so they were experienced after they were mustered. But they had to arrive and converge at that training facility from all across the empire. Then having done so, be redeployed to likely hotspots to defend, but also to staging areas for the player's invasion plans.

So somehow you have to communicate all that in a way that can be understood by someone as young as 12 who got the game from the GooglePlaystore app.

Modding is not just changing values so the process makes more sense, but educating young people how to play so they have an excellent experience and want to play the mod. Any young person who does all that and wins combat sorties should be rewarded by the process. A young person has no military experience, but then has no idea that everything has to be learned to assemble fleets including sound economic practices as it's expensive.

Typically modding is done to make the process seem realistic, historically accurate, completed in a logical manner, and guiding the player as often making something like a fleet is the amalgam of every possible skill. Otherwise it's just a big mystery and they won't get the combat bonuses and so fleets were not properly formed.

It's documentation as well as changing values.

In graduate school, my teachers always reinterated that you cannot fully comprehend a subject unless you can teach it. You have to truly know the material by documenting it in order to modify it, and then only after playing BotE many hundreds of hours, then hesitantly alter anything about it...and only if you can justify why doing so makes sense. The idea is to improve some aspect and whom are you helping? Is it beginner players or middling players or expert players?
