Special tech can confer a boost so this is vital as it's the sole way to exceed speed beyond 4 sectors per turn.

Besides this, ship chasis in the ship data and in the ship design affects speed and range too.

Note the limits on speed and range. You can re-engineer, but pay attention to this limit.

A ship that is more manueverable and has better speed and range, plus research modifiers, can then "evade" during combat. One might intentionally "draw out" an opponent from their homesector by avoiding and be pursed by a minor alien for example. They are not supposed to leave their homesector, but this exploit works in testing. Then you could crush them as you have starships outside and they pursed your faster more manueverable ship into an ambush.
I have done it several times.

This is the BotE.ini and is set when you create a game. The rate of expansion adjusts the boundaries of overall space travel plus the degree of your homesector including space docks and in conjunction with outposts and starbases.

If one were able to change the bote.ini larger after modding after many hundred turns, then range would be maximized. The next question is how as it seems encrypted.

So as a modder, you know the player will not jump through all the hoops and read all the wiki, and put this information together. BotE is complex. So your documentation mght briefly explain such things. A random event or a diplomatic dialogue might suggest it. Then players who are paying attention will get it while it will be ignored by most.

That is a small subset and when those players do ship designs after acquiring alien race tech, will produce the fastest ships possible. Or you can design the fastest ships, and like a famous Scottish engineer in a famous science fiction show, he can get a little more out of the engine.
