What do you do when a sector is lacking a natural resource

Beitrag von UesugiKenshin »

We all would lucky if every sector had 9 planets and all six resources.

I usually don't bother with any sector that has one useful planet and only one resource and is limited to 10 billion. It is too much trouble and you can't expand properly and you lack an adequate population to really do everything and create defenses.

It is amusing as the Earth has 7.7 billion people and probably has 80 planets in our sector. Probably most sectors in BotE should have nine planets every time for best expansion.

Read on and see how I deal with annoying sectors.

When you lack a resource, you can create a resource route. The problems are innumerable as while it starts out quite simple, after 250 inhabited sectors, it can take six hours to fully map out every resource route. But after a hundred turns, that plan is junk and needs a fresh six hours of planning.

I do that only if I have to. Doing so means no trade routes, and while the income is small, it helps with diplomacy, and only helps in the first 300 turns with minor alien races. By then, they have their own domestic mining.

There is no easy way to go through 250 * 6 natural resources in a fast way. And you cannot ever trace so many orange lines.

So I might actually cancel them all and start over. ARGH.

Instead, you can buy what you need in the trade window. Then it shows up the following turn. This means buying extra so you don't run out.

You could send a transport from a sector with extra, then after arriving then use that freighter to do the same function elsewhere. That is an expensive way to do this and like juggling 25 freighters constantly, but it works.

As you gain natural resources, they build to a maximum. So what you can do is transfer some surplus to the interstellar storage. Then what I do is when a new colony is created, then send say 4000 units of all 5 resources (obviously not deritium) and then you have a starting amount of 20,000 units.

Before I ever colonize, I send many colony ships as a group and they terraform all of the planets and then I colonize the sector. That saves you a significant amount of money as many kinds of infrastructure then exist from the start. In extensive testing, that is the best strategy.

In the Balancer mod, I am thinking of two types of infrastructure.

Something like Organized Crime that runs extra resource routes (something like this already exist on several sectors under minor race control).

Then have asteroid mining where even though the natural resource does not show up on the galaxy map, you could build an expensive asteroid mining operation for each natural resource based on a progressively higher amount of tech, power, raw materials, and money. This way, and advanced sector could have all domestic materials rather than using resource routing.

I was thinking of doing something where gas giants allowed a special moon mining operation for deritium.

Alternatively, someone would alter the javascript slightly and more planets and more resources would show up. It only makes sense to have gas giants show up if eventually some unusually special projects would occur on those gas giants. That would just modify the existing formula for galaxy generation.
