There is a standard human way in logistics ie (the detailed coordination of a complex operation involving many people, facilities, or supplies) things and people move from the interior to the exterior. So as the capital grows, then scouts and colonists and transports and attackers and defenders and soldiers move out. That creates a frontier that is poorly defended as the weakest regions are outside on the periphery.

But this an illusion as in history, villages formed and they made wealth by producing food, mined coal and ore and gold, and manufactured crafts and created art and send even people as specialists to the capital. Why?

The capital has too many people and so has a limited way to produce even food due to population density. It has limited carrying capacity due to Mathusian forces.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Robert_Malthus

Put a bunch of wolves in a forest and meadowland and they are apex predators and eat all the wild game and then the game population declines, and the wolves will starve or relocate.

This is why colonization happens. The capital can send a steady stream of colony ships out, and so it goes full circle from villages sending material (today income through taxation plus food and sometikes raw materials) to capitals who process these and create specialists there and build expensive infrastructure, and send it back out to.extend the borderlands of the frontier.

"So wait a minute", says the wise military Terran commander. "My peer over in the Khaoran empire knows that is a nutty as a fruitcake method of urban planning to grow an empire. You don't want your castle walls to be weak, right?"

Your weak walls touch his or her weak walls and then there is a military clash of empires.

What you want to do is build a series of leapfrogging colonies with space docks entending range. Then colonize in straight lines and "define the boundaries" early. Then your strongest colonies are on the periphery. Then the walls of the citadel are strong.

See? If you build higgly piggly ie in a state of disorderly manner, then your poorly defended colonists will run into Cartare raiders and eradicate them or enslave them.

You build the walls until you meet opposition and build inward. You create the sphere of influence, not allow it to be randomly created.

Your military is involved and garrisoning the borderlands. You have outposts and starbases out there. You have ships acting as escorts for helpless colonists. You have hubs which supply raw materials on resource routes. You have trade centers on the borders so act with trade routes to gain a trickle of income to and from minor alien races. Then they become friends and maybe some day members of the empire as they cannot just grow as fast without the help of a wealthy empire. You end up terraforming colonies and then once diplomatic relations begin with minor alien races, then terraform their worlds in acts of benevolence or acts of subversion.

Leaders acting randomly are labeled schizophrenic. Leaders don't react but respond and do so calmly with a plan which has short, medium, and long term goals and happens tactically and strategically.

See the computer ai is methodical and exploits weakness...in random acting impulsive humans who have no plan.

And it's not just opponents out there trying to do the exact same roles to grow and empire and defend it. You have impediments to your success through stellar anomalies.
http://birth-of-the-empires.de/wiki/ind ... =Anomalien
Radioactive Nebula, Meaturean Nebula, Deuterium Nebula,Ion Storm, Biphasic Nebula, Torion Gas Nebula, Neutron Star RX, Radiopulsar PSR, X-ray pulsar PSR, Magnetar SGR, Gravimetric Distortion, Continuum Rip, Black hole, Quasar QSO, Wormhole,
In the player setting is this feature. Space time is largely empty but the map shows the vital strategic stars and planets that are important and doesn't show the empty space time. Why? Because the map would be GIGANTIC.

These anomalies make navigation either free of anomalies up to perilous situations where one would be forced to damage vessels to go through them. It's why I suggested a token amount so you can encounter them, but not have things go haywire during all your logistics efforts. Advanced players will have lots of these and micromanaging starship navigation as the slightest error would kill starship crews. Good leaders don't throw away the lives of colonists, citizens, and soldiers.

Can you believe this is FREE? This game rocks! When I was a kid and dreaming of space travel, I would have given my left testicle to play a game like this.

There is the unknown out there as none of our people know what is out there. You should be a little scared or you are too naive to be an astronaut, let alone commanding astronauts.

In the player settings, you can vary the expansion rate and thus the galaxy, while huge based on my suggestions in the example Terran sandbox introduction, but can seem smaller as you raise this expansion rate.
EXPANSIONSPEED=SLOW or MEDIUM, FAST, (default) CLASSIC
All these new aspects of a giant galaxy are happening. Do you want them to happen faster? Probably not when playing for the first time as you will be overwhelmed.

The faster the expansion rate in a standard game, the faster the opponent empires find you thrught scouting/exploring. And then diplomacy happens.

http://birth-of-the-empires.de/wiki/ind ... Diplomatie
Why not read through these and try to get some idea of how complex all these features are? I can explain them, but you as a leader of an empire will have to spend a lot of time reading and contemplating your goals and plans...or your mistakes will kill billions by famine and war and setting the player settings too hard beyond your capacity to respond.

BotE is not a button masher. BotE is a marvelous unbelievably complex game with all kinds of features, and micromanagement if you so desire. It shocks me that it's free. Why not sign up for membership as it costs nothing and thank the developers and participate?

It's worth your time. Anyone could get a lot out of the richness of this virtual galaxy. It's intellectually stimulating. You learn skills playing BotE, and especially as a young person, that later would make your lives easier as you have to plan and figure out how to accomplish goals and manage diplomatic relations...with sometimes very hostile people who do not share your motivations and ethos.

BotE can be played on a Windows XP computer up to present day by using a different Vista and above computer. There are two versions from the developer blotunga. It can be played on Windows tablets. There is even an older original version called Alpha by the original developer Sir Pustekuchen.

It can be played on Linux computers.

It can be played on Android tablets even legacy Kindles and Nooks.

The developers spent thousand and thousands of hours making it...yet it's free. It doesn't have animations, but it does more than Uciana or Stellaris or any space game I have ever heard of or played. It handles far larger galaxies.

And there are modders for it to that added more tech, major aliens, ships, troops, minor aliens, mediors, etc.

It could take you hundreds of hours to build up an empire and be able to wage war. Or if you want, you can import a save game that is for turn #700 as the Omega Alliance in sandbox mode.
viewtopic.php?f=107&t=7294&start=75

Then you could see what BotE looks like in an advanced save game.

Or you could play in turn #400 as the Omega Alliance on easy difficulty, but with a good treausury and protection with high internal security against sabotage, but a rather large number of minor aliens and playing against the Khaoran, the Heyoun, and the Terrans in a standard game.
viewtopic.php?f=107&t=7712&start=15

Here are instructions on loading an advanced save game (importing) as well as exporting one of your save games.

Good leaders can wisely spend revenue through taxation, but there never is enough as the people want more, but complain about high taxes. So a wise leader learns how to make money and create stability, then have surplus treasury...imagine that and not deficit spending.

And when you have enormous surplus, so much that you cannot spend it, but have learned to manage so well that you become an economic wizard, then you become like Midas and you make an inexhaustable amount of money. Millions every turn, and you outright buy what you need instead of waiting for it. This method works. You make so much that there is huge demand for ore as all that construction is going on and so inflates the prices. Then you sell your ore and crystals as the prices are inflated. As you sell, this deflates the price. So much so, that you can buy ore and crystals cheaply. Rinse repeat.

If I could, I would make taxes zero in the game now. There is no need for taxes. The Omega empire has a utopia. The people should keep their money and have more land and a surplus of their own. Wise governance demands it as the economy then is vibrant and growing. Optimism is buoyed by stability, security, and surplus. Yet everything that can be built, has been built. All research is known to the Omega. They might as well be godlike.

That is manipulating the value of resources your worker-citizens mined from planets. This is how you win the game. You make as much as the Heyoun, then surpass them. You then as the Omega are best all around. If you play nobly as a kind altruist, despite your species' characteristics, yet please trillions of citizens, then you get away with a far different ethos and help minor aliens. They then join your empire or are pressured into it.

Then if you are a clever person, you take their alien technology, and maximize your own Omega tech, and redesign your ships so that the smallest fighter has the power of the strongest destroyer class vessel. Your dreadnought is the strongest in the galaxy. You are both loved and feared.

What will your empire look like? Will it be strong or weak? Will it be kind or cruel? Will it be poor or wealthy as Croesus? Will is be just or merciless? Will it respect autonomy and self-determination or will it wage economic, diplomatic, technological, information, and asymmetric warfare?

But that is a sandbox game. Historically it would be like the Sumerians as those rose to power and had no peers and no enemies yet met other people from various backward cultures.
https://www.history.com/topics/ancient- ... east/sumer

See if the Omega had to struggle, it's far more difficult, yet my tactics, stratgey, goals,.and plan still works in the omega turn#400 save game. So there is something to it.

Now I want to mod, so even the Khaoran could apply this method and win...by moduating sabotage. And they would be noble as they are written yet militaristic, just benevolent.

"Speak softly and carry a big stick."

The Cartare can do this too. They need not enslave anyone.

The Rotharians can do this and not create a police state.

You can play as any empire, and largely end up as the Terran Coalition is supposed to be played.

Having accomplised that, you would then add in more stellar anomalies, alien monsters, and random events. You would raise the difficulty.

You would have to develop new tactics, strategy, goals, and plans. I'm optimistic that BotE can provide a DECADE of entertainment and intellectual stimulation especially facilitated by modding...for endless variability with even more major alien species.

Birth of the Empires has been played far longer.

Chess (Shatranj ) requires no animations and the earliest recorded game is from the 10th century.

Blotunga has a beta multiplayer in development. If that ends up getting a release, then a modder could play as every empire. Then all empires would be strong and not attack. Then at a very high turn#, then save the game as all the individual empires. And then both the ai and then player would begin with full blown well developed empires with stable treasuries, rigorous research, high raw material surpluses, a well orchestrated standing army and fleet of extraordinary experienced veteran professional soldiers. And they would begin with high morale across their empire.

Then BotE would be quite a challenge as both the ai and the player are armed, experienced, and ready for battle.

If BotE ever has a campaign editor or a map editor, it would be a legendary game of huge cultural significance.

Every major race has a back story. Here is the Khaoran's.
Bild
The Khayrin are among the most feared warriors in the galaxy. The search for power and domination of each clan leader makes them true masters in the field of weapons, be it their battle-hungry warriors on the battlefield or their heavily armed ships in space, which strike quickly and mercilessly. Some of these battleships have cloaking devices with which the Khayrin pounce on their prey from the darkness of space. Their powerful industrial plants move masses of extracted raw materials in order to keep the resource-devouring war machine running, while huge hunting grounds ensure supplies for the population. On the other hand, all institutions that are not primarily used for combat are of less importance. In the Khayrin clans, espionage is viewed as an intolerable act of war, which is equivalent to a challenge to combat and is answered as such.

The most significant event in the history of the Khayrin was the rise of the Prophet Grethan. Previously, the many individual clans on Khayrin had worshiped different deities.

Grethan was an extraordinarily charismatic and rousing speaker. Coupled with his fanatical will and unshakable faith, he cast a spell over the population with his passionate sermons and the first clans swore allegiance to him. He was able to inspire the clan leaders with the idea that they would become legends themselves if they only proved themselves honorably and fearlessly enough in battle.

According to Grethan, the fate of the world is overseen and directed by the " Council of Heroes ". Only the bravest and most glorious warriors of the Khayrin rise to this council. Anyone who does not make it to this council would either succumb to the opponent who had killed him in the arena of endless struggle forever in recurring battles. The others, who not only fail but are also dishonorable or cowardly, slide down into the "void", where they then rot for eternity and are eaten up by worms.

More and more clans joined the prophet and within a few years the once wild planet was united under one banner. Clans that did not bow voluntarily at first or did not accept the new religion were subjected to brutal violence. Only if they had teamed up would they have had something to oppose to the warriors of the prophet. But since they all fought individually, they were unceremoniously overrun by Grehtan's overpowering and fanatically fighting supporters.

Now that the planet was completely under the control of Grethan, the self-proclaimed religious leader, he chose one of the strongest of the young clan leaders to be the first emperor. Grethan had chosen this young Khayrin because he found him easy to control and manipulate, and so he could keep the strings in hand. This shows that Grethan himself, his own commandments of honor of open combat and the code of honesty he preached did not take so strictly to achieve his goals.

In order to keep the war-whispering temperament of the Khayrin under control, competitions were held in many places, most of which ended in death. In this way Grethan prevented civil wars and at the same time the warriors continuously perfected their fighting techniques. The entire Khayrin people flourished during Grethan's reign. On his behalf, the clans developed new technologies in competition with one another.

With the coronation of the first emperor, Grethan introduced a numerical calendar for the first time in the history of the Khayrin. Each time the sun changes, the number is increased so that 2 years later it was " 4 after Grethan ". He also had the first written records to be written down in order to perpetuate the first important events. In addition, heroic deeds had to be preserved as inspiration for future generations. Although it was only scrolls from the Kujai tree that were described, it was still a big step forward.

114 according to Grethan, the great prophet died a natural death in old age. Although he did not die an honorable warrior death by his own standards, he nonetheless received a place in the Council of Heroes and justified this with the following: "Although he was not a warrior, he was entitled as a prophet and divine leader to ascend to the council in order to succeed him To continue to support generations in the afterlife as a consultant. "

Without Grethan's leadership, the empire lost its stability. The son of the first emperor had learned a lot from the advice Grethan had given his father, but he lacked diplomatic foresight. When the clan leaders demanded more participation, he simply dismissed them and was violently overthrown a short time later. A new emperor was appointed, the one with the most troops. The clan leaders formed a high council, which stood by the emperor as an advisory body and as the highest authority. From then on, the system lasted, and for a long time, apart from minor uprisings by individual clan leaders, which happened again and again due to changes in power, the Khayrin Empire remained united.

Strength through submission

The foundation of the KhaGrethan order around 800 after Grethan is of great importance. Kha-Grethan comes from a primitive dialect and means “sons of Grethan”. Its members claim to be direct descendants of Grethan, thus privileged.

In 1021 after Grethan there was a great change. The traditional votes in the council were no longer able to oppose the use of semi-automatic firearms and handguns went into mass production. This caused a lot of annoyance, especially in the increasingly conservative north of the continent. The clans there feared that the use of such weapons would render honest duels meaningless. At last a good time had come for the warriors of the KhaGrethan Order to intervene. Like Grethan himself, not always working with honorable methods, they sensed the opportunity on the one hand to increase their reputation with the emperor and at the same time to be able to get rid of rivals in order to finally secure their position as permanent authority and high council. But attacking a clan for no reason and without cause would have drawn the wrath of the council and the other clans, as wars without prior authorization were strictly prohibited (wars were still very common).

The KhaGrethan order allegedly fought with traditional blades, but made use of the firearms hidden in them. With a small army, the order succeeded in defeating the rebellious clans in a very short time, as they traditionally did not use firearms. Much of their much larger army was effortlessly gunned down before the KhaGrethan warriors were even within reach of their blades, the rest of the demoralized being slaughtered in hand-to-hand combat.

When the emperor finally got the news that a small order had defeated a large part of the clans in the north and that these clans had allegedly planned a rebellion against him, the first big step was taken. The rebellion was grossly exaggerated, but these rumors were enough and the news found fertile ground with the Emperor. One Grethan later he was convinced that there could be no one better than the KhaGrethan to protect him, the Emperor. He named the warriors of the KhaGrethan as his personal "brothers in battle" (he would never have dared to admit that he needed guards) and has been adding new recruits to the order ever since.

In the order, young Khayrin were trained mentally and physically to become excellent and devoted fighters for many years. Not only were they more fanatical, more aggressive, aimed at annihilating any opponent without mercy, they were also better armed than most of the other Khayrin at the time. Thus, the KhaGrethan were the absolute elite, and still are to this day.

The BeNah, the battle ax from the first great battle of the order, in the modified version with a built-in firearm, is still used by many Khayrin today.

Sweat and tears

A historical rebellion of decisive importance for Khayrin society took place in 5071 after Grethan. Also known as " The Battle of Sweat and Tears ". At this point a few smaller, lesser clans pooled their resources to fund the first expedition to the neighboring Class H planets. They hoped to find new, worthy opponents there, in order to gain respect in the eyes of the other great clans and to rise in the favor of the emperor. When the expedition team landed on the planet, they discovered ruins of an ancient, highly developed civilization. The builders found remains of advanced technologies in some tombs, which were probably left behind as grave goods. The Khayrin only took away what looked roughly like a weapon and what could be accommodated on the still small and primitive ships.

The clans that were involved in the expedition, however, kept their discoveries secret from the emperor and began to research the finds they had brought with them. The alien weapons included radiation weapons, which were unknown to the Khayrin until then, as well as other incredibly effective weapon systems which were used more for mass destruction than for hand-to-hand combat. After only half a Grethan these clans had started to equip their joint troops with all the newly available weapons. With this advantage and the prospect of a glorious victory, the advance on Behlia, the capital of the Khayrin Empire, began.

The gathering of the rebel troops did not go unnoticed. The emperor immediately dispatched a battalion of the already legendary KhaGrethan order, led by the great order master Kekam, to nip the uprising in the bud. A battalion of the Order would normally have been enough to defeat twice the number of opponents without problems, but the KhaGrethan were defeated within a very short time by the new weapons. The new weapons were so superior that the Order's surprised warriors couldn't even get close enough to even enter serious combat. According to tradition, only Kekam survived the first salvo that was already destructive and, furious at this disgrace and the betrayal of the principles of the Khayrin, stormed the enemy army in a frenzy of blood. Allegedly, he managed to dodge their shots and killed a few dozen opponents in hand-to-hand combat before being pulverized to dust himself. Despite their superior strength, through misfires and untargeted shots, as they were still untrained with the new weapons, the insurgents had even lost some people, but were able to advance on the capital without any problems with almost full troops.

The fact that one could triumph over pure strength and will with technology alone caused panic among the Khayrin. The High Council and the Emperor finally decided, contrary to the principles of their own faith and the Khayrin ethic, that their own safety had priority. Thus the first weapons of mass destruction in the history of the Khayrin were commissioned to avert the overthrow of the ruling elite. A bomb with high penetration power was developed surprisingly quickly, inferior to alien weapons, but still effective enough to wreak havoc. Throwing the bomb from the air was, however, too dishonorable for them, they wanted to look the enemy straight in the eyes and thus leave a message to posterity and future generations if they won. A unit of the bravest warriors was dispatched to take the bomb to the enemy camp and detonate it there.

With the promise to rise to the highest ranks of the Council of Heroes through the glorious death, the ascension command marched against the enemy with a bomb in their luggage. The bomb carriers stormed unstoppably while their friars tried to intercept the bombardment with their bare bodies in order to bring the bomb into the correct position. The rebels only recognized the importance of the initially strange tactics when it was too late. Thousands of Khayrin on the battlefield were torn to pieces by the huge explosion, the uprising had been averted with a bang, as the rebels were so sure of their cause after the first triumphant victory that they without hesitation sent all their armed forces into battle without prior sensible, strategic considerations. Since then, a sculpture carved out of red volcanic rock has stood in the Emperor's palace of three seriously injured Khayrin, who are pulling a huge bomb behind them with the last of their strength to commemorate the battle of sweat and tears .

Because of these traumatic events for the Khayrin and the knowledge gained from them, the development of the Khayrin took a new directional turn. From this point on, long-range weapons were allowed, significantly more effort was invested in research, and space research in particular has been given great importance since then. Without these events, a Khayrin would probably not even dream of having a fight other than hand-to-hand. After the great battle, the emperor himself sent a closely monitored expedition to the neighboring planet a short time later. To this day, the Khayrin scientists are still busy analyzing and recreating the technologies found there. This wealth of technology also gives rise to the camouflage technology, which the Khayrin probably would not have been able to develop themselves so early.
