Wars generally begin because of a shortage of growth potential, lack of natural resources, proximity, and military threat potential.
In Japanese Budo (the arts of war) and Bushido (the way of the samurai), then for realistic actual conflict to even exist, there has to be "maai" meaning the proximity of two enemies or combatants. The further the maai, the less chance for realistic combat to occur.
A 40x40 galactic map is not only realistic, but required for a full scale eventual intragalactic war as there is a large enough distance logistically speaking that an empire can develop and gain a footing and grow and develop mining and nonmilitary and military infrastructure and a healthy economy.
Even a 40x40 map cannot support six major alien races in Star Trek fashion as it's too small compared to the total size of the alpha and beta quadrants let alone part of the gamma quadrant.
The only way to emulate that economically and militarily and creatively is by preset save games through multiplayer. Random generation results in peculiar AI decisions that are not strategically sound.
It's far better to only have four if that is what you desire, and this is largely flawed due to sabotage as currently unrealistically configured.
Otherwise you might try two non-sabotage races on a maxed out map with a 95% minor races. You can have a fine game playing as any race facing the Khaoron on a huge map and just build proper intel buildings (to defend yourself) but choose NOT to use sabotage. You will slowly grow and so will they, and both will pick up some members but few minor race fleets.
If you choose to play any other way, the experience will likely irritate your sensibilities after turn 400+. Sabotage is economically prohibitive.
